Noire vs Mafia II. Mafia II is like an empty GTA with very focused missions and nothing to do in between, La noire is more an adventure. Mafia 2 vs L.A. Noire - Mafia 2 vs L.A. Mafia 2 was awesome it gets my vote, but I also enjoyed LA Noire even though it wasnt for everyone I liked doing the investigating and everything I guess thats why I enjoyed Murdered Soul Suspect.

Spoiler tags are !X kills Y! I really liked LA Noire. I liked how they were trying to do something new and different. But in many ways it gets lost with respect to what it wants to be. The core gameplay is the interrogation game.
The rest of it just seems like filler until you get to the next interrogation. Then later it becomes an over-the-shoulder 3rd person shooter. It just feels weird. Plus, there are times when you are essentially asked to guess what the developers think you should be thinking and breaks the mood when you guess wrong.I hope they do more and refine the concept, but if you only have the budget for one, it’s hard to really recommend LA Noire in the face of other positive reviews of Mafia 2.

QUOTE='DevilMightCry'great detective work, amazing facial animation and longer narrative get LA Noire. DanielDust Of course, that's exactly what made me interested in L.A Noire, don't see what anyone could expect from a game that was advertised exactly for this.
Seeing people call it boring makes it sound even better, it means there's some substance and depth to it, not just boom, pow, and the likes. In that case we shouldn't compare LAN to Mafia, or GTA. It's like Black Dhalia meets, Heavy Rain, meets Grand Theft Auto. I just know that it was one of those games, despite scoring high, is not a mass appealing game, because it splits the audience in half, and tries to appeal to both. Except that only one half has been executed well. The writing in LA Noire is much stronger.
Mafia 2 devolves into a cliched mob story you've seen dozens of times already.TheCapitalistTo be fair, LA Noire tells a bunch of cop/hard-boiled stories that we've seen dozens of times before, too, but I guess there's more variety than in a mob story.Anyway, the two aren't really comparable - they're both story-driven and set in similar eras, but Mafia 2 is very action-focused, while the action definitely takes a back-seat to the investigating in LA Noire. QUOTE='TheCapitalist'The writing in LA Noire is much stronger. Mafia 2 devolves into a cliched mob story you've seen dozens of times already. And to people who claim Mafia 2 is better at free-roam: The game is pretty linear and there is nothing to do besides the missions. Topsemag55 That's not entirely true - I've had fun raiding gun shops and getting away without one cop present, also starting fistfights and make it to where the cops shoot the other guy. I unlocked freeroam mode with a mod (yes, freeroam was in the game files but never used) just to do that:lol: SO much fun starting fights with two main characters following me for backup and drive-bys. I really enjoyed the story of LA Noire, but I won't ever play it again. It was a pretty boring game, and by that I mean it holds your hand for the entire time.
You can't draw your gun unless the game tells you too, can't fist fight, can't spare a suspect's life, etc. Mafia 2 plays much better and looks better, with the exception of the facial features.
If you want an awesome noir story, play LA Noire. If you want an awesome game, skip it. Honestly, though, I think that's just the way the developers wanted it. The biggest flaw in LA Noire (who the frack gave the title with a 'NoirE', I thought it was just 'Noir') was that driving and hitting peds affect your outcome of the missions. The game is linear to the point where they should almost eliminate the free roam factor.Lets just say if you like LA Noire better than you got more moral fiber because the game is slow.

In American Hollywood it was known as Noir, but references Noire, obviously.I sort of know that already and thats why this bugs me. A game based on LA (hollywood) yet they use the French term instead of the American. QUOTE='Jacanuk'QUOTE='topsemag55'I've got Mafia 2, and even though there are some things that could be improved, it looks pretty good and has Phys-X. I'm wondering how LA Noire stacks up with Mafia 2.
Am I correct in saying Mafia 2's graphics are better than LA Noire? Mafia 2 is not a game like LA Noire so how can you compare the two? It would be like taking Call of duty and asking if Heavy Rain is as good.Pretty easily actually.
They're both games with faux sandbox; only entirely different directions and yet entirely similar mechanically. The French film critic(s) who first coined the term used 'noir' too - noir and noire are exactly the same word in the French, with different gendered endings. Presumably LA is feminine, hence it would be most grammatically correct to call it LA Noire. Actually, for that matter, I seem to remember that they were using the term to define a sort of canonical category for the series of German-inspired American films that we now refer to as the classics of film noir.
The French weren't so big on it until after Hollywood noir had become famous, as far as I'm aware.not that I remember all of this in much detail. Haven't studied it for a few years (and I passed up the opportunity to research a thesis on it this year, sigh).
Anyway, for a game with 'noir' in the title, it's frankly kind of baffling how much of it is simple police procedural, with only latent noir themes for good chunks of the game. It only really goes all-out Double Indemnity/Third Man/Chinatown in the last few hours (definitely the game's best moments, imo). I played about 45 minutes of it before I went to work in a rush.
And the graphics are pretty good. Not as good as Mafia 2, but pretty darn good due to facial animation technology and animations in general. More games would benefit from this technology. It makes the voice actors sound and feel authentic. From watching gameplay previews before this game came out, I thought it would be distracting but it isn't at all.
It only enhances the game ten folds.I'm indifferent. I don't think the game is a bore-fest. It's actually quite fun. LA Noire might hold your hand, but it does a great job and keeping you entertained with things to do constantly. Some of the sequences are amazing. The gun-fights are satisfying. And playing detective puts this game in a sub-genre/category of its own.I like it a lot.
And it's much, much better than Mafia 2. QUOTE='Jacanuk'QUOTE='topsemag55'I've got Mafia 2, and even though there are some things that could be improved, it looks pretty good and has Phys-X. I'm wondering how LA Noire stacks up with Mafia 2.

There's no 'can or can't'. And yes it's very easy comparing these kind of games, they're slanted on third person action and the 'open world hub sandbox' game design. Throw Crackdown in even; a game without that rigid structure of those, and Mercenaries plus Red Faction for good measure. Download the witcher 2 pc.

BigBoss255 Really?? Mafia II was my GOTY last year, the gameplay was average but it had an amazing story and setting. I'm thinking L.A Noire will have it beat for gameplay but the story doesn't look nearly as interesting.
It's story was way too derivative of Goodfellas and other mob movies. Mafia 1 was pretty unique. The presentation of the story was dead-on the first one, but the story itself was still been-there-done-that. I bought the game full priced, and I found it satisfying, though. Gunplay was a lot better than GTA4, and that was enough for me. QUOTE='BigBoss255'QUOTE='MFDOOM1983'I just hope it's better than mafia 2.

I'm thinking L.A Noire will have it beat for gameplay but the story doesn't look nearly as interesting.Cliched story, lifeless city, sub-par gunplay and missions. Another issue was the speed limit which by itself isn't a problem but every mission takes place on the opposite side of the map.
Which only increases the amount of time you spend in the lifeless city. QUOTE='mrmusicman247'QUOTE='funsohng'QUOTE='BigBoss255' Really?? Gunplay was a lot better than GTA4, and that was enough for me. I thought the gunplay was better the GTA4 too. Anything is better than GTA4's gunplay. It was awful, Mafia II's is ok. Anyway Goodfellas is my favourite film maybe that's why I liked it so much. It even had some of the same music.
